Academy Pre-Scholar and Scholar Learning Guides
Moor House Academy provides a learning guidelines system, which is flexible to the needs of growing individuals and families. These guidelines provide a smörgåsbord of discovery based learning activities, in the context of suggestions to improve family rhythms, and create a Gospel-centered learning environment in the home.
Pre-Scholar Program
The Junior and Aspiring Scholar Programs are Pre-Scholar Programs. The Junior and Aspiring Scholar Learning Guides are available for free access to the public.
Junior Scholar Program (roughly eight to twelve years of age)
Junior scholars, roughly eight to twelve, are still in the aspiring scholar stage, as they are not yet independent scholars. Yet, they are beginning to seek more challenge in their studies and are in the transition to becoming a scholar. The Junior Scholar Learning Guidelines were designed to help parent-mentors in coaching their youth through this transition period, and expose their children to greatness. At some time, between eight and twelve, youths are ready for more challenge, are interested in the mechanics of how things work, and are cognitively ready to grasp the mechanics. Cognitively, they are also becoming ready to reason and understand increasingly abstract and conceptual ideas. Junior scholars still benefit from participation in Aspiring Scholar, family-centered learning, with the added challenge of Junior Scholar discovery learning, and exploratory activities.

Aspiring Scholar Program (roughly children up to eight years old)
The Aspiring Scholar Learning Guidelines are inclusive of children from approximately birth to twelve. Our goal is to guide families to establish their own quality “core phase family rhythms” and coach them in; inspiring their children and exposing them to greatness, as well as, varied learning experiences in a family-style Gospel-centered learning environment.
We offer two different tracks:
* Track I is built on a Four Year Cycle foundation that integrates spiritual and secular learning. This construct is a four-year cycle that covers four grand periods of earth’s history. The Learning Guidelines touch on a basic introduction to three ancient languages and one modern. All subjects are studied in their historical context, as we follow the forward march of human history. Parents also have access to Learning Guidelines to assist them in refinement and character development of their children.
* Track II is an alternate to the Four Year Cycle, offering a smorgasbord selection, of options to choose from. This is very flexible and organic, easy to expand or be condensed to allow time for larger projects.
These learning activities are carried out in the home, mostly through natural family rhythms, and occasionally with other families with Aspiring Scholars. As the children grow into Junior Scholars and begin their transition toward becoming a scholar, the other families become increasingly important. As this contact with other families prepares them for participation in young scholar classes.

Scholar Programs
Adult Scholar Program
The Adult Scholars are adults who want to pursue their own education or want to become better mentors and teachers of their own children. Our adult course is a weekly class that is a 5 Pillar focused program– adults study classics and selected topics in educations, parenting, leadership, as well as study the scriptures, words of the living prophets, and other classic religious writings. Scholars are encouraged to read selected readings, write about those readings, and participate in class. For those adults living at a distance we have private mentoring.

“Upon the proper education of youth depend the permanency and purity of home, the safety and perpetuity of the nation. The parent gives the child an opportunity to live; the teacher enables the child to live well. That parent who gives life and teaches his child to live abundantly is a true parent teacher.”
(David O. McKay Gospel Ideals, p. 436).
Young Scholar Program (roughly twelve and up)
Young scholars are youth, roughly twevle and older, ready to commit to a scholar education. The Young Scholar Learning Guidelines were created to be a resource for parent-mentors, as they mentor their own youth, in obtaining scholar skills. Parents are youth’s first mentors. Our program was designed to respect and support this sacred relationship. Parent-mentors work with their youth to inspire vision, establish a target, create goal-getters, make commitments, assist youths in evaluating their own progress, and redirect energies when there is need. The Academy has suggested reading and writing lists, for parent-mentors to use with their youth. Youths discuss these readings with their parents.
The Orem Lyceum offers live Young Scholar Classes in a positive peer environment. In Fall 2009, Orem Lyceum offers:
* The Art of War, a coed course for young scholars 12-18.
* Man, Government, and Law. Is an intensive advanced scholar class opened to youth 12+ and adults. Meets 9-11:30 am, on Wednesdays. This will delve deeply into the principles, history, applications of Law, Government, The Cycles of History, Human Nature and more.
We encourage Parent-mentors to organize a Moor House Academy Peer Extension – Young Scholar Class, for their own children, in practice and project scholar phase, and invite youth living in their area. These have been done successfully in many locations. Local classes can be as small as two to three Young Scholars. These local classes offer important positive peer involvement for youth in the Young Scholar phase. Group experiences can provide rich opportunities for youth to add polish to social skills while being led by an adult mentor. Parent-mentors can use the Moor House Academy reading and writing lists and other Academy tools with their local classes.
Moor House Academy offers a variety of independent in-depth study opportunities, where youth are encouraged to work with their parent-mentor and customize their own educational path, using scholar projects and scholar-mentor contracts.
